Grandma Betty's Baking specializes in buttery, melt-in-your-mouth shortbread cookies - just like grandma used to make! We make our cookies the old-fashioned way: handcrafted in small batches using quality ingredients.
Grandma Betty was a remarkable woman. Beyond being a gifted baker, Betty was a devoted wife and loving mother, and had a commitment to life-long learning. She lived for many years in Toronto's East End, where she raised five children.
Each year at Christmas, Betty's family, friends, and neighbors all looked forward to the smell of her freshly baked shortbread.
To our family, these buttery, melt-in-your-mouth cookies taste just like the magic of Christmas - but that hasn't stopped us from enjoying these cookies all year round!
Grandma Betty's Baking was founded in 2022 by Betty's only granddaughter, Samantha. She loves baking, family traditions, and being able to cheer up the people she loves with a little something sweet. For Samantha, her grandmother Betty represents the power of one woman's love, wisdom, care, and determination to create positive change in her home and community that lives on through generations.
We care deeply about ensuring the best possible experience for our customers.
This means that the quality and safety of our food products and our kitchen are of paramount importance. We work diligently to maintain a clean, sanitary, and well-organized kitchen. We strive not only to meet, but to exceed, the most current public health standards and food safety regulations. Samantha holds a certificate in safe food handling practices and has years of experience advocating for healthier and safer work environments.
NUTS: Our cookies are currently baked in a kitchen in which some products containing nuts are stored. While most of our cookies don't contain any nuts or nut ingredients, at this time we cannot guarantee a 100% nut-free facility.
If you have more questions about our ingredients, please ask! You can reach us at email@example.com.
With the guidance and approval of Toronto Public Health, Grandma Betty's Baking is currently a home-based bakery in Toronto's East End. To maintain privacy, we don't share the exact address with customers.
Yes! Right now we offer delivery in Toronto's East End. The boundaries of our delivery area are:
Kennedy Road to Yonge Street (East to West)
Eglinton Avenue to Lake Ontario (North to South)
Delivery is FREE on all orders over $25.
Unfortunately, no. Our understanding is that the current zoning by-law does not allow customers to pick up their orders from our location.
If you're keen to pick up your order in person, we may be able to arrange for you to pick it up from Daily Goods Market. Daily Goods is an independent grocery store located at 1544 Danforth Avenue, just a few steps west of Coxwell.
We also offer FREE LOCAL DELIVERY on all orders over $25.
In most cases, YES! In fact, the Ontario Ministry of Health published this handy Guide To Starting A Home-Based Food Business back in 2021.
Shortbread Cookies and most other baked goods are considered to be "low-risk" foods, which means that they can be legally and safely prepared and sold from any home-based kitchen, provided that Toronto Public Health is consulted and all applicable guidelines are followed.
We LOVE this change because we believe in the importance of removing barriers and creating better opportunities for people who are marginalized. The ability to operate a business from home is a critical issue of accessibility and equity for people living with disabilities (visible or invisible), people who are unable to afford to lease commercial spaces, and people who are denied access to small business loans and other financing.
As we mentioned above, we take food safety seriously. Samantha has worked diligently to ensure that the Grandma Betty's kitchen meets or exceeds all of the requirements outlined by our municipal, provincial, and federal governments.
Yes. We passed our most recent inspection in June 2023 and we are looking forward to their next visit!
Toronto Public Health only recently began granting formal inspections to home-based bakers, and they do not currently include us in their online directory. As far as we know, they may begin publishing our inspection results online sometime in 2024. In the meantime, anyone who wishes to see our 2023 inspection report is welcome to e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org and we will happily share it with you!
Anywhere and everywhere! As long as they are following the guidelines applicable to their region.
Absolutely! It would be a dream-come-true to open a storefront location, and Samantha is working hard to make that happen as soon as possible. Every time you order Grandma Betty's shortbread cookies, tell your friends about us, or engage with us on social media, you are helping this little business grow and getting us closer to that goal! Thank you so much for your support!
Our Classic, Lemon, Earl Grey, and Holiday Gems shortbread cookies contain only 5g of carbs and only 2 to 3 grams of sugar per cookie. As long as you're enjoying them in moderation, they can be included in most diets!
We would love to be able to offer Vegan AND Gluten-free options as soon it's possible for us to do it safely and with no risk of cross-contamination. Right now our kitchen space is too small and we can't afford the extra set of baking equipment that we would need. This is definitely on Samantha's list of future goals, so please stay tuned!
Ask away! Please send your questions to email@example.com and we will respond as soon as possible - usually within 5 business days.
